Manny Pacquiao’s political party, People’s Champ Movement formally filed a petition to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for their recognition of the poll body last May 4. Manny actually expressed his decision to run as a Congressman for the Sarangani province.
Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao was introduced by Michael Buffer on his last 2-round KO fight against Ricky Hatton, as “the man of Sarangani, Philippines.” Many fans and friends have somehow wondered then why Sarangani, when Pacquiao has always been introduced as from his root province, General Santos City.
Pacquiao already ran last 2007 also for Congress in General Santos City, but eventually lost to Darlene Antonio-Custodio by around 37,000 votes. However, last December 2007 after his win from “The Dream Match” against Oscar Dela Hoya, he actually announced his intentions of getting into politics again by 2010 as a hopeful Congressman of Sarangani.
Back then, many fans expressed delight when he lost the 2007 elections in General Santos City because of much expectation from our Pambansang Kamao, wanting Pacquiao to still fight on the ring. Even the Commission on Election chairman, Rene Sarmiento somehow don’t approve because Pacquiao right now does not just hold the No.1 Pound-for-Pound title but represents as an icon of unity among the Filipinos.
In someway, Manny Pacquiao into politics may instill something ‘divisive’ or tarnish the unifying effect he is resembling to our nation. But, who knows what the man can do and what he can’t do? Not unless, he’ll just let some strings pull him with his every move. Then, not so fast… Manny boy. 😉
